HP are becoming more and more of a pain, they are very aggressive on many inkjet and laser printer models to bully the consumer to purchase the Original ink/toner cartridges.
We educate all customers to turn off these updates as most printers are set to AUTO.
If this is not done, then you run into issues with ANY aftermarket cartridges when the update occurs, HP will blocked the copied micro CHIPS on the cartridges so any spare inks ready to go into the printer will not be read in the printer until the chip on the cartridges are reset to work with this update.
Most firmware updates with the current premium refill cartridges in the printer will JUST take the ink levels away and still work, very rare the cartridges are instantly blocked not to work. (can happen but not as often)
We reset the microchips with every update as we have a jig at the store, this way they are always guaranteed to work with these updates, for example 903, 953, 912 and 963xl series.
(These updates happen every 3/4 months without fail on many printer models by HP)
1. make sure lcd screen is on the home page.
2. Press home, back arrow, home, back arrow
3. If this is done correct, your see Enable Disable Menu.
4. Click on this option.
5. Scroll down to turn off firmware update. (turn off)
6. Press back
7. Press back again, now you should be at the Home page.
When the above is done, when an update occurs, your printer will not download this and your inks still will work and show ink levels.
Also any spares will always work when update is turned off.
